The Light is truth and love simultaneously. When the Light shows us truth, reality is revealed to us in love.

This Light, the fire of Christ, reveals the nature of reality that God would like to see lived. If we allow it, it helps us to improve ourselves, our relationships and society.

Quakers are known for social action. This is because our vocation is to act in accordance with the Light we are given. When the Light shows us new truth about society, we are called to respond in ways that lead to God’s love gaining greater precedence in the world than it had before.

But we can’t know and reveal the Light unless we’ve allowed it to act within and among us first.

Quakers shake things up, because we help love break forth in new ways. What pops up isn’t expected, because we reveal what has been hidden.

Sometimes, both Friends and those we affect don’t see what God is doing. Sometimes we can point to it when it comes to the surface, but usually we don’t recognize our influence until we see it in hindsight. This is understandably unsettling.

What is particularly challenging is when Friends reflect Light, reveal truth, to each other. Friends fall into the belief that the Light is more for others or society than it is for us.

But we can’t know and reveal the Light unless we’ve allowed it to act within and among us first.

If Friends can see new truth from the Light as coming in love, we will be emboldened to act on our leadings and live lives worthy of our callings. We will also be more open to conflict in our meetings and yearly meetings.

The world is not just out there. If it was, the Light wouldn’t need to be within. Only after we allow the Light to change us are we prepared to show it beyond the walls of our meetinghouses.

I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
(Luke 12.49, NRSV)
